How To Survive The Holidays As A Divorced Parent

On Behalf of | Dec 16, 2016 | Firm News |

After going through a divorce, the holidays can seem daunting. Whether this is your first holiday season as a divorced, single parent or your fifth, finding the energy to bring holiday cheer can be hard. It can feel like you’re out of place among the married couples at work holiday parties and family gatherings. At Gossman Law Firm, LLC, we understand what you’re going through, below are some tips to help you get through the holidays this holiday season.

  1. Spend time with positive people: When you’re on the edge of falling into your own sadness, spending time with negative people can be exhausting and bring you down. Make a list of all the invitations you have received and make a mental note of which friends bring you down. You should decline events with the friends who always seem to have a hard time seeing the positives in life.
  2. Embrace your new independence: If you aren’t with the kids this year for the holidays, schedule fun, adult activities you would usually want to do but have never been able. Is there a fancy New Year’s Eve party you’ve always wanted to attend but couldn’t because you were watching the children? Maybe you’ve always wanted to volunteer Christmas morning or attend midnight mass. If you are alone on New Year’s Day, spend this time to set goals and make plans to help improve and grow in the coming year.
  3. Make new traditions: Who says you have to celebrate the holiday on the actual calendar date. Why not make new traditions with your children and celebrate Christmas during the week or the next weekend. Call your kids and let them know Santa didn’t skip your house, and their presents will be waiting for them. Even if you won’t be with them on the actual, it’s important that your children still know you’re thinking of them and that you will still plan to be there for them during the holidays.

However you decide to spend the holiday, remember you are the only person who can make yourself find joy and be at peace with the world. We at Gossman Law Firm, LLC, hope you have a joyful holiday season. Remember, if there has been a change of circumstances in your family and your child custody order no longer works for you, contact our Birmingham divorce attorney to discuss your options.
