Benefits of divorce mediation when deciding child custody issues

Parents who are going through a divorce often face difficult decisions regarding child custody. In some cases, they may be able to reach an agreement on their own. However, many divorcing couples find it helpful to seek the assistance of a mediator.

Mediation can effectively resolve child custody issues because it allows both parents to express their concerns and needs in a safe and neutral environment.

In addition, mediation can help to reduce the conflict that often arises during divorce proceedings, which can be beneficial for the children involved.

What happens during a mediation session

The session aims to help the parents reach an agreement about custody and visitation arrangements for their children. During the session, the mediator will encourage parents to communicate with each other and reach an agreement that works for all parties. The mediator may offer suggestions for possible solutions, but it is ultimately up to the couple to decide whether or not to accept any proposed compromises.

If the relationship between the couple is contentious, the mediator can meet with each party individually and go between the two until they reach a resolution. Once a parenting plan is agreed upon, the couple will take it before the judge, where it becomes legally binding.

If parents can’t agree, it becomes the judge’s duty to decide based on the child’s best interest. Alabama wants children to have a relationship with both parents and for each parent to assume responsibility for raising the child.

Therefore, a divorcing couple should work with a mediator to develop a parenting plan that shows the judge that both parents are committed to working together for the best possible outcome for their children.
